The REI matches are not MUCH longer. I took a pair of scissors and trimmed the woodend end just a little....

I agree, but with the way they flame, I want all the distance between the flame and my fingers!

So, now I have two striker strips, one dozen REI, and one dozen kitchen matches in one safe. Not too bad.

Uh, you're not putting the striker strip in the SAME safe are you? That's doesn't seem like a great idea.

I was looking around REI and found these Nalgene containers.

I like the containers themselves just fine. If I want to make a fire, however, I will deploy my trusty Windmill, mini-Bic, or firesteel.

Craig,

Tell me more about your windmill and overall lighter experience. I have been wanting a "high-end' lighter, but don't know much about them. I have a Zippo and really like it, but the fuel evaporation is an issue. I know they make fuel canisters for the Zippo, an I have been experimenting with a cheap $1 SS capsule that seems to work well that fills my Zippo about 1/3 full.
Lind to SS capsule for $1, scroll down to "pill holder"

I have been looking at the glow in the dark windmill from TAD gear.

When you take two strikers just let the striking surfaces face each other and maybe put a strip of tape on the long sides to form a hinge. The match heads just touch the carton back of the striker. Thatīs no problem at all.

I bought myself a ruby red EMS-branded Windmill when I got my new job. It hasn't failed me yet. No fuel evaporation, either. But then I don't go around climbing mountains at great altitudes. It always lights on the second try, but never the first. Operator error, I guess.

I used to carry an old Zippo I bought at a flea market. The fuel was always evaporating. It needed a charge about every other day. I had lots of fun with it, starting small fires in the woods back when you could get away with that sort of thing.

The Windmill lives in my kit. I keep a mini-Bic in my pocket. Why? To light candles on tables when my wife and me go out for romantic dinners.

I found out the hard way that the Windmill's lid does not allow the lighter to be inserted into the chimney of a table candle.

I have a Windmill, too, in my FatBoy. My one and only complaint is that it gobbles fuel at a horendous rate. I EDC'd it for about a week, and had to fill it twice.

I concur that was the downside I realized after just playing wtih teh Windmill was that it ATE fuel like crazy but if you need to light something can nothing else works it seems to work

Sure! Is there a problem with tha.... ARRRGGGHH.. Extinguish me!

Just kidding.

If you put the striker in the safe with the rough side facing the plastic wall of the safe, no problem. The matches are jammed in there tight enough so that the striker cannot rattle and turn around.

My REI storm matches came with a pair of extra strikers in a heavy plastic sleeve. I trimmed my matches and the cut the striker off the box and put it into my K&M matchcase. The extra striker was thick and took up quite a bit of room so I elected to use the box striker. The striker is away from the matches facing the matchcase wall and there is no movement inside the case.

My experience with nalgene bottles is that they seal very well. I may have to go look for some of those bottles.
