I was in a hardware store and saw replacement flints used to start torchs for welding. I was wondering if anyone thought about using those as a spark thrower and whether they worked? They would fit in a PSK wonderfully.

If you looked at the sparker that holds them, you saw it's kind of specialized. You could get the strike on a file on a leatherman or similar, but I would hate to see it eat up a good file.

You've got me curious, now. Maybe some threaded rod to screw into the base of them . . .

I had this idea some time ago. Mine are about 1/8" in diameter and 1" long. They work great. The blade of a knife or a piece of hacksaw blade are adequate as striker. I carry one on my keychain. The handle is a piece of hard plastic tube (3/8" long). One half of the tube was heated and pressed flat. I drilled a hole in the flat part and pressed the flint into the handle. A 1" split ring holds the flint on my keychain and serves as handle. I protect it with a piece of clear soft plastic tube. I have some in my kits too. My practice flint lasted for about 100 fires and is still useable.

Why not get a small bolt that fits the flint. By the way, I do not think that it would eat up the file part of a multi-tool knife. You can use the same striker for years without wearing it out.

I used the same welding torch sparker for years, indeed. But my tolerances for my knives is a little higher.
