Anyone have an on-line source for small amounts of silk in North America? I want to experiment a bit with it for bandanas and a few other things tickling around in the back of my brain. Local fabric stores only have some yucky embossed/embroidered silk for wedding dresses...

TIA,

Scouter Tom

Thanks - interesting site. I'm actually looking for fabric, not garments, though.

I find most of the silk I use at Salvation Army as dresses and the like. I have a 36"x36" square cut from one dress with no seams. I collect them as I find them, and for about $0.50 each.

You can magnatize a needle to make a compass by rubbing the needle on silk... Since I wear a silk rag the 36x36 often and carry needles in a hat i wear, I can make a rude compass anytime I want so long as there is still water and a leaf to float the needle on.....

I find the rag very useful...... what will you try out? Tom, I asked my cowboy rag maker and received one online store, [www.webstreetfabrics.com]. They will sell one yard minimum @ $25 acording to her. If you decide to just buy a few, the many western retailers have beautifull raggs in large sizes, fully hemmed. Ill have to look around locally. With both a Chinatown and little Tokyo my sources are a bit richer.

Hey, Tom. If you find a source in Chicago's Chinatown, I'll run over there and pick it up! (along with some Dim Sum).

There are various grades of silk. I remember working with my father on a job site when I was young where we were hanging silk panels on the wall. The slk was a course weave and did not resemble what we know as silk, the finly woven, soft fabric for clothing. The stuff was a bear to work with as it did not streatch at all. I also remember that ity was very expensive compared to other fabrics he worked with.

Unfortunately, he retired a few years back or I could find out more about the source. Heck, I'd guess that there's still a roll of the remnent laying about in the old warehouse.
