AOL posted on their main page a link to article about safety and preparadness while hiking... seems like it is more of a pitch of merchants but at least it has few valid points:

This section of the article has the standard first aid priorities in the wrong order:

First Aid
Some ability with a needle and thread, bandages and tape, splints, and the like will come in handy, but there are three essential skills you'll need:

1) Stop the bleeding
2) Clean and protect the wound.
3) Clear the airway.
