I consider myself deep in the mindset, and no once item in my pack cost over a hundred dollars.

Naw, we're on the same page. You gotta remember, I am also an electronics tech, which means I love gadgets, and the GPS is the epitome of navigation equipment in my book, it simply can't be beat. I love being able to look down at my Brunton display and in less than two minutes see a blinking icon representing my location superimposed on a topo map with landmarks, roads, towns, lakes, rivers, etc and other places I've been all there on the display for me. Still, I do not take it with me all the time. I like to save it for the most necessary operations. But will never find me without access to a compass. I can be successful with just a compass in most cases. Occasionally a map is needed. But if I have those two, then I do not need a GPS, nor does anyone else. It is really nice to have one, but not necessary.

It is like a calculator. It makes my job a lot easier, but I better know how to do my job without it. I'll never be as good at math doing manual calculation as I am with an electronic calculator, the same holds true for GPS machines. It is reassuring in both cases, though, to know I can do without them if need be.
