Anyone watch the new show Brat Camp?

It looks like we MAY get to see a bunch of kids get taught how to start a fire with a firebow in the next episode.

Why do the delinquents get to have all the fun???
Personally, I think EVERYBODY ought to go through a course like this, say... the summer between Jr High and High School. Think of how much better off society would be... 'course, it used to be called Scouting, and it happened much earlier in life.

Even better: Scouting with an attitude!

Troy's got a point - I wish I too had the opportunity to go through such an experience . . . for some nature training and so on . . . Too late now :-(

I just read over on Bushcraft forums that you can have a GCSE in survival! (a General Certificate of Secondary Education - British qualification which every teenager in the UK has about ten of by the time they finish school at the age of 16) If only I was four years younger!

Used to be the good kids could join the cubscount/brownies and boy scouts/girl scouts. My mother was the "den mother" for our cub scout troop when I was that age but once I got old enough for boy scouts there was no parental support since all the parents wanted to support their kids in sports, we managed to camp in a 4 h cabin once but that was it. I hope that when the time comes I'll be able to run/help run a BSa troop myself. My parents have a nice farm in WV where we could go camp and such, if your wanting your kids to do things like that try to find something you can get involved with. If there are no boy scouts, my church runs something similar so you may be able to find a group there.

It's called 'Rite of Passage.' Most traditional societies have one, ranging from a week in the bush to getting your ashes hauled for the first time. Too bad we've given it short shrift.

Ok, I have to ask...
'Ashes hauled'??? That is a new one on me....Though I can guess some things, both plesant and unplesant, that it may be...
Anyone seen that tribe that makes the boys stand in a line while a man goes from one to the other and circumsices them Ouch!!!

That's what I suspected, but that is a new term for me!
Most I can figure some derivation for, but not that one!
