Why do you carry a wire saw?

I never really understood why people brought that item. If I need to cut pieces of wood from trees, I would just use my bare hands and make small pieces again, with my hands.

I like the saws on SAK's or on my leatherman tools. You can use the saws for other things beside fire prep. You can carve notches in wood to make deadfall traps. Use the back of them as scrapers for fire steels. Cut larger pieces that you can't break. I've seen photo's of some large diameter trees 6-8 range cut down with a saw on a SAK.

I've used wire saws in the past and find the saw on a SAK or leatherman to be more versatile.

I'd like to know how you're gonna break an 8 inch branch (for a ridge pole) off a tree with your hands.

I have had some good luck with my wire saw. Some are garbage, but the ones I found work well. They aren't a replacement for a good full sized saw, but they have always done the work that I have needed them to do. They are light and take up very little space. Their usefullness will totally be based on what the user needs are, not to mention how resourceful and inventive the user is. Personally, would I survive without it? Of course. Have I benefitted from having one with me? Yes. Do I use it every time I go out? No.

A person survives, tools just make it easier.

I carried one around in a kit for about 10 years w/o using it, until the fisrt time I did and it broke on the first stroke. In fairness, possibly because of being kinked by all the packing and repacking in that 10 years.

BCB has come out with a new model which they say (and they are pretty good) is a dramatic improvement over the old ones. I have one on order, but the new US distributor is just coming on line, and I am not holding my breath.
