One of the joys of the internet is communicating with people from around the world, learning cultures, breaking down cultural conceits ( ie, how dare the Swedes publish webpages in swedish "We" can't read!) One of my online acquaintences emailed how much the internet has helped with his english. I can only imagine the influence my abuse of grammatical decorum and mispelled words has on countless young minds.

All language is fluid, constantly changing. Thta's why we have a tough time reading Shakespear's plays unless they are "translated" into semi-modern english. And they were written only a few hundred years ago. I suspect that the advent of internet communications will accelerate this process. English in 2050 is likely to look and sound very different than what we know today. It's also likely to be understood and spoken by more people than ever from almost every corner of the world. Folks who speak other languages will complain about the loss of their language and heritage. But even our beloved english will have eroded to a point where we can make similar complaints.

But that's the price of evolution. Otherwise we would still be speaking in the original language of our ancestors ... grunts.

There is a wonderfull Irish Writer, Flann O'Brian ( AKA Myles Na' Gopalean.) among his works ( A bash in the Tunnel, The poor Mouth, the Third Policeman) is a story of linquistic scolars going to the Gaeltacht to record the purest form of gaelic.Tthey inadvertantly recorded a drunken pig's happy grunting in a dark pub. They were sure it was the purest form of gaelic by it's utterly incomprehensible grunting. My great Grandmother could have translated!
