Here is a new survival toy:

Velcro Zip Strips that are reusable. We got a roll at Sportsman’s Warehouse for less than $5.00. One side has the loop and the other side has the hooks. You put the end through the slot and just press it down. It holds tight. Just lift and pull back through the slot to remove. These should be able to do anything plastic, single use, Zip Strips can do. They could be good for shelter building, equipment repair, and general utility. Check them out.

I've used those for a long time to tie stuff together in some of my R/C planes. Never thought of putting them in a survival kit, that's a good idea.

These are great for organizing extension cords and wall wart adapters.
Found some at the $1.00 store.

They're cool alright, but I'm pretty pleased with my solution to the tasks: I cut 1"x12-14" strips of tire innertube and have a few stuffed into almost every pack, pocket, and wrapped around every PSK.

I can do (I think) everything I'd do with the velcro strips, and much more. Aside from obvious lashing/fastening, a small piece of innertube strip, lit with a match, will start more fire in wet weather than Napalm! Stinks when it burns, but drips hot, flaming, rubber onto tinder and kindling.

Note that these Velcro Grip Strips are not as "grippy" as the traditional Velcro "One Wrap' style. Cheaper, by far, but not the same thing in terms of performance.

Doug,

Have you done testing on the Velcro strips? They seem strong, have you had them pull apart?

I use bicycle inner tube on the end of my Surefire C2 to protect my clothes from the sharp knurling. It stinks and makes your hands stink. I haven’t found a substitute for that application. I avoid using inner tube because of the smell.

I wonder if heat shrink tubing would work? Does it come in a large enough diameter?

Yes, there is a definite difference. Not measured it, but enough that it is very obvious.

I've got some one inch shrink tube, but it has THICK, like 1/10", walls. And it is a pain to shrink. I've never seen that size for the normal heat shrink.
