Chris mentioned it on the website in his story "So near yet so far". Although I dont believe he condemmed it the tool hints as a toy for the fool.
Whether you purchase one or not the thing I remebered from the written account (I read it an awful long time ago - even before I joined!) that you need a good backup on your side.
Thanks for another valuable lesson Chris

-- Having checked the link it looks heavy and cumbersome. If you desire an impressive tool I'd suggest considering the SOG revolver Although it has the looks of a novelty knife it gained terrible good reviews.

I looked at those in passing but thought our own militaries issued machete was much better. Its called the Woodman's Pal and is made practically in your back yard. I have owned one for a number of years and think it is a well-made tool. I grew up in an area were I had the chance to spend many hours swinging a machete and still use them several times a year. Only now I have to choose from the 8 or so I have managed to add to my tool collection. Woodman's Pal

When I saw the importer had these back in stock I braced for this posting. I said 'SPETSNATZ' and my cat Piewacket came bouncing sideways, back arched and catterwalling at me. It's an interesting tool, and if I was a MIG pilot a usefull accessory, given the surrival kit knife is a cheap slipjoint that looks like a pakistani second. Anyone feeling the siren call of this thing should order in a pizza delivery, slip Rambo 3 in the VCR and think of all the money you saved.

Even though I don't own the Woodsman's Pal, I would certainly consider that over the Russian item. It looks like a much higher quality tool.

OK so I was trying to be nice in my first post! You will be much happier with either of the ones the U.S. issues to our troops. Also Cold Steel imports some very useable ones from South Africa. Of course if you get this Spetz one and like it Harbor Freight sells a 12 way hatchet, hammer, crowbar, nail puller, pliers, do it your self dental tool that you will just love!

Woodsman's Pal, Spetnatz survival tools, Kukhris and Stihl Chain saws are all interesting tools. I think people need to remember a basic survival situation, even in a resource rich environment is supposed to be a short term, conserve your energy affair. I am far to lazy to construct redwood tree deadfalls for Arnold movie predators or Swiss Family Robinson treehouses. Give me a tarp shelter, a fire and carefully poke me awake when the helicopters can be heard

If I needed a good machete type knife, I'd look no further than my RAT-RTAK. Here in Iraq, it is just as good for lopping heads as for trimming the verge. Okay, that was bad, but this is an impressive blade nonetheless. Once again, here's the link: http://www.jungletraining.com/rat%20knives.htm
