Haven't experimented yet, but here's the gist:

Bury a ferrous object (i.e., needle) halfway into the earth lengthwise. Return in four hours. Float said object in water (on leaf, cork , whatever). Instant ( <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) compass.

Anyone tried this?
