See http://abcnews.go.com/ for their story (June 30th) about wilderness survival for kids.

OK - I work a couple of buildings down for ABC TV, so, take it with a grain of salt - Dave Tillet, who wrote the article, is a regular here, and on CPF - I won't give away his IDs, but.....

Nice article! More informative than most, by far.

The "don't wait" info that Doug pointed out is more vital than most people realize. Most people (adults or kids) rarely stop when they realize they're lost, they always seem to keep going. The longer the search is delayed, the larger the search pattern becomes.

People often ask "Well, why didn't they use those search dogs?" They don't use them (or don't succeed with them) because the window of opportunity for dogs is a lousy four hours or so, depending on climatic conditions. Rarely does the notification of disappearance, added to the search crank-up time, give dogs much of a chance to do their job.

It depends upon whether the dog is a tracking dog, scent dog or cadaver dog. Dogs working off of scent (any human scent) are usable until the victim is found, providing human traffic (scent contamination) has been limited in the search area.
