I have seen a few posts about combo compass/watches, but not much comment concerning a survival watch. I am considering the below Tritium watch to add to my survival equipment:

Does that model have a compass? I didn't see it mentioned. My kids (with my wife's charge card) got me a Suunto Observer Sr (digital clock / compass / thermometer / altimeter / barometer / kitchen sink <img src="/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />) for fathers day. Nice watch but I actually returned it. Alarm was inaudible and too pricy for my taste. Though I told them how much I appreciated their thoughtfullness, I suggested i would be happy with something a little less pricey (I like the Casio Pathfinder series, and we could use the savings for groceries <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

no none of the S&W watches have a compass that I am aware of, I mentioned that I have a tritium compass also in the survival kit, sorry about any confusion. I am just considering the watch for the tritium feature and also that from this particular retailer, it comes with an extra large watchband, which would come in handy on my large wrist.

Yes, I have one, but it is not a vital piece of survival gear. A regular old watch and flashlight is just a good.

I use a Breitling Avenger Seawolf. It's solid titanium with a doubly-multi-coated sapphire crystal, and is waterproof to 3000 m (10000 ft). The movement is a certified chronometer, and self-winding.

It's likely to survive in conditions much worse than any I expect to face.

The only trouble is remembering to keep it wound if I take it off for more than a day, and getting it serviced every couple of years.

I wore that watch for a number of years until the battery went out. I sent it to its service center but it kept terrible time after that. I usually set my watches to the atomic clock so if they start running different I notice.
Nice enough watch but not worth the money in my opinion. The tritium is cool but my glow in the dark automatic watch will never need batteries and can hold its breath deeper and longer than I can.
I hate battery-powered watches for the most part always dieing when you need them. My next watch will be another divers watch ether an automatic or a solar powered one like my wife has used for a number of years now.

I recently bought a solar-powered watch. I'm having doubts now though, about how long the battery will last really. They surely can't stand being charged and partially discharged forever.

I thought this particular S&W branded watch just came out -- has it been out several years? I know there have been other tritium watches out for a while.

Hi Pete, I know it's not 'vital equipment' but it does have a cool factor and I am a gadget freak too, plus it comes with a very large nylon band and I have a large wrist that is very difficult to get a watch to fit. I already have a Casio Wave-ceptor solar powered atomic watch, but I like the tritium S&W.

I have a Casio G-Shock solar. I suspect I'll replace it for the same reason I've replaced all the other watches I've owned... something other than the battery fails. Most of the time it's the band, or the buttons, or the case is scratched up, or the o-rings leak, or...

I figure if I get 5 years out of the battery on this one, that'll beat the average by a good year or two. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
