I once had a pair of merrell goretex boots, but these let me down, leaking at the toes, but I've never tried goretex socks. Does anyone have a preferred brand?

Jampot,

Others may disagree with me, but the only good Goretex sock is a dead one. Buy wool. If you're trying to keep your feet dry while wading or whatever, there are better ways to do it. Goretex is not something you want on your feet....especially with a boot over it.

Andy

Read the information @ www.wiggys.com regarding Goretex. Aside from my belief in Wool's superiority ( especially the "smart wools") It has a forgotten advantage. I can easily mend a wool sock with cordage. I can even create cordage by unravelling a sock. A sock can be improvised into a filter medium ( preferably unworn) and can even provide emergency tinder. All this at a price I can afford to carry extra pairs for their primary use.

Frou-frou items - not really worthwhile.

Wool also has a unique property, it's exothermic, meaning it heats up when wet. I too prefer wool and cotton socks, over anything synthetic, but goretex socks usually go over these, not replace them. The survival expert Ray Mears recommends the goretex socks by Berghaus, but they are pretty expensive.
