Home Guard Ready Kit Plus is apparently being discontinued. "This item is being discontinued. Availability may be limited." I wonder if Walmart is no longer carrying them or if Home Guard is no longer making them. -- Craig

The 911 scare has worn thin, Califonia hasn't had a big quake in the last 24 hours and Florida hasn't been hit by a Hurricane in past week so I guess the PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. no longer feel that they are in danger. Oh did I say that out loud?

I guess you're right. People are still unwilling to accept anything can happen to them at any time.
After the blackout one or two summers ago, I though New Yorkers would FINALLY see the light -- pun intended -- and carry maybe Photon Microlights or something. No dice.
Someone wrote an article wherein they asked New Yorkers about the blackout. You know, being prepared and all that. The attitude was, what, me worry? They didn't care and didn't want to. Their response was something to the tune of shrugging and walking away.
Very immature and irresponsible, I think.
But then again, I'm cynical, pessimistic, and paranoid.
And prepared.

It looks like Walmart is carrying a smaller version of the kit for $24 now: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.g...%3A4128%3A92574It's in a smaller backpack, and they have eliminated the following items: Leather gloves, glow stick, emergency blanket, 50ml bleach bottle, rain poncho, 2 gallon water bag and safety cutter. I still saw the "plus" version being sold at BJ's Wholesale Club for about $25 as recently as one week ago. As lame as they are, they are "better than nothing" for someone who won't spend the time to put their own together with better components. (For example, I happen to know my mother-in-law has one in her car, my offers to "upgrade" components for her have fallen on deaf ears.)

I don't offer to upgrade anyone any more.
I had a hard enough time getting relatives to carry a Photon II (that I had to purchase) on their keychains in addition to their keys. And then most of them forgot the batteries could be changed and threw the lights out!
I learned my lesson. I don't even try now unless THEY ask me first.

You say that like it's a BAD thing!
I am now working in a place with no windows, and in the event of a power outage, it would be as dark as the inside of a rock. I have two small flashlights on my keychain, which I keep in my pocket, NOT in my locker. I was in the market checkout line, and a man tapped me on the shoulder and held out his little flashlight, also on his keychain, and silently pointed to my little Solitare hanging out of my pants pocket on its little lanyard, and winked.
So, here in WA, there are at least TWO of us!

Every xmas I get the "throwaway" white led keychain lights for stocking stuffers for all the relatives. I think I bought a bag of 20 or 25 from Countycomm last year, keeping the price low. I threw one in everyone's xmas stocking. For most of them, I actually take the time to put them on their keychains for them while we're hanging around talking after the mad dash for presents with the kids is over. That way, all the in-laws, aunts, uncles, etc have them. For some of them, I even have them carrying small SAK's on their keychains. When my son needs to open a new gift from his grandmother, he looks at his grandfather now and asks him: "grampie, are you packin'?" to use his SAK!
I guess my lesson was to stop asking to upgrade people, I just do it for the ones I care about at this point.
