When I read the article, I saw that the camper had made 2 of the biggest mistakes in bear country.

1. Left food in tent.

2. Ran from bear - this is almost guaranteed to trigger a predator to attack. (Note: running only works if you have a slower companion near by! <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> )

Finally, her friend yelled "play dead". From what I've seen/read/heard, this does little to deflect a black bear, once it has attacked.
