I have just been notified that one of the courses for which I had signed up and paid, has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

I was the only person who signed up to take Emergency Planning!

What do you do when local colleges finally offer emergency and survival courses only to promptly cancel them when no one signs up?

A lot of people have short memories, don't they?

Is there any chance that you could drum up enough interested parties to get it reinstated? How many bodies do they need to think it's worthwhile?

Do you think the local LEAs or firefighters would know enough interested people to do some good?

Can't say I'm surprised. These are the same people/PHRASECENSOREDPOSTERSHOULDKNOWBETTER. that shake their heads at the Photon Light on your keychain and can't find a reason for a SAK. Maybe some publicty thru the Red Cross, CERT, ARES. RACES, Boy Scouts, VFD and Public service anouncements would help. Just look at the number of unprepared in CA. and FLA. If multiple annual disasters can't motivate these people, nothing will. I guess I'll stop now, before I rant.

Find 3 of the most popular ladies on campus. Offer to tutor them in a difficult class, fix their car, walk their dog. In return the women let it be known they are signing up for this great class but nobody is enrolling and it may be dropped Does it work? Did for me, saving ' A paleolithic cultural survey seminar of western europe.'

I'm not surprised, but I am disappointed.

A local fire marshal was supposed to give this one-night, three-hour course. I found his work email address and phone number listed on the Web, and expressed my continued interest via email.

If I don't hear back from him in a week or so, I'll try calling him. We'll see what happens.

Chris:

That is sneaky, dirty, underhanded, low down, dispicable, uncouth, raunchy, gender based, sexist, self-serving, narcassistic, and just so plain cool that it is worthy of someone like myself.

I am glad to see the "PC" crowd has not yet cowed you in your creative thinking.

I came to this college partially because of the japanese language courses here, and the very semester I enrolled the courses were cancelled and the class no longer offered at the college permanently because not enough people apparently signed up

We don't have any survival courses here, but we do have a first aid class. I wonder what we do for 16 weeks, considering most first aid courses are only a few hours over the span of a few days....

You might look for any of the following if you haven't taken them before.
Basic EMT usually taught at a vo-ed school often at night
Basic fire usually taught at a community college
CPR with AED often taught at a fire department or the red cross.
Basic first aid - taught by the red cross.

I was a volunteer firefighter/EMT-P for about 15 years and I think all of the training I took during that time is relavent. Also dealing with real life and death emergencies is useful experience with respect to my own well-being. Much isn't wilderness survival, but many urban emergencies fall are the topic that are covered.

You're not kidding, short memories.

Most people I talk to, instead of being encouraging, say, why do you need to know that stuff. They talk about 9/11 like it's Pearl Harbor, ancient history to them.
