I was just monkeying with my PSK the other night after reading all the posts on fishing line and bobins... and thought about a different method.
I like to keep the things in my PSK within easier reach than a tin wound with 50 ft of cord then 10 feet of tape... I'd bleed to death before I got to a band-aid...! I use an old leather wallet stuffed with a few items... I use the stuff daily, and amaze my freinds with everything I carry on me... Anyway...

I found that I could wind 50 ft of 20 lb test braided fishing line around an old credit card... then cover the line with aluminum foil... with the end of the line exposed, it could be pulled out easily... then wind 3 ft of duct tape and right next to it 5 ft of black elect. tape...
The whole thing is thin enough to put in my wallet... yet have instant access to any one of the three..! Pretty handy in a pinch.

Don't know if this saves space or not... but it seems pretty cool. For what it's worth..

Thanks for the creative thought. Seems like a better use of a credit card than the one my wife puts it to.

This is along the same lines as the thread on easily worn cord wherein a method of wearing a reasonable length or cord as a belt was discusssed. I would like to see more thoughts on how we can easily carry more useful stuff outside of an organized PSK. As you accurately point out, things in a PSK are not that readily accessible. This has ups and downs. I don't use anything in my PSK on a daily basis because it is dificult to break into. Not only do I have 1 feet of paracord and 5 feet of electrical tape I also have 5 square feet of foil and enough ranger bands to cover the whole altoids tin completely.
I am not sure that I would enjoy having to open that thing in an emergency but I am sure that everything I think I need in there will infact be in there when I get it open. My first aid kit (which travels in the other pocket) is easily opened and needs restocking regularly. Because of this it is occasionally out of stock on items I might need.

Cool idea, I may have to build one as a supplimental kit.

How do you keep from bending stuff that really should be rigid, like matches?

I don't have matches, but I do have a electronic lighter and a small folding knife... they both fit inside the wallet.
Along with a signal mirror, first aid items, a mini fishing kit (also on an old credit card)... etc.
It isn't as small as a altoid tin, actually half again as thick... but I gain access speed... which for me is a fair trade off.
As for stiffness... the knife, lighter, and mirror keep it unbendable.
One thing I have noted, it's not water proof- but I don't carry anything in it that would be hurt by water.

You might try replacing the old credit card with a signal mirror. The featherweight mirrors are not much thicker than the credit card and would add a significantly useful item to your kit.
