You'd probalby want to take the scalpel blade out. Otherwise it SHOULD be OK, but I haven't tried it. I figured it looks suspicious enough that it might trigger a search.

Yea, you might want to take out, the blades, bright lights (could blind someone to submission), hooks, matches, needles......etc. Probably the only thing you'd be able to take is the tin. Really, I wouldn't want to have to take apart my PSK in whether it had anyhting dangerous in it or not. I'm not going to unwind all the 550 rapped around it, and the tape. Then seal it back up.
Not worth the effort, just throw it in luggage.

No, the tin could reflect into someone's eyes, & one edge could be ground into a knife blade.

The Barn Door Homeland Security has made sure that if there were a plane crash, and people survived, they wouldn't have the two really handy things to have: a knife or a way to make fire. Better hope the ELB wasn't damaged in the crash.

I have several times - though I took out the scapel and fish hooks. I keep some windproof, waterproof matches in there, too, but when I fly I sub them for a Bic lighter (less suspicious- looking).

I've never been searched because of it, but I guess that's because I'm a young woman.

I've got a modified kit with everything but the blade and hooks, plus some other stuff, and made it through O'Hare, LAX and Richmond, VA just this week. Only stop was to take a look at my lighter, which also made it because it wasn't a torch style. Of course that won't necessarily be the case next week . . .

My girlfriend ... many times ... both national and international ... without the fishing hooks or scalpel.

Stay safe,

They must be very dull trips as it is impossible to be a "cutup" and "hook" a jovial audience.
