Dogs make good alarm systems, home defense partners, and body guards, not to mention, they're just good friends to have around. Cats are unsurpassed at keeping small, four legged scavengers at bay, and can be pretty entertaining to live with/around. As long as either one is doing a job of one sort or another, and not running off the game animals in the area, I'd say they're WELL worth having with you.
