I took one of the small altoids containers and made an easily pocketable kit to supplement my EDC.
It is wrapped in ranger bands and sealed with orange 3M electrical tape.

I put in it:
1. a few safety pins
2. an MP1 tab
3. a 2 foot piece of stainless wire
4. a cut down lantern lighter (basically a spark light)
5. a small plastic whistle
6. a few fish hooks
8. a piece of fat wood
9. spider wire
10. black thread
11. needle
12. Razor blade
13. Two exacto blades
14. Two pieces of natural fiber rope
15. two eye hooks
16. packaged with vasaline impregnated cotten
17. A mini S.T.O.P. sheet
18. A name/address/DOB/Blood type sheet
19. Polished lid for improvised signal mirror

My main purpose of this kit mostly was a fire tinder kit as finding good tinder when everything is wet is what I always found most difficult. Along with what I carry for edc this gives me basically enough to catch a fish or small animal, start a fire, and fill my nalgene bottle back up. <img src="/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Nice kit. Do you find your other stuff getting all greasy from the vaseline/cotton? If not I may try packing my tinder loose like you have instead of stuffing it into a straw. I guess it might have the added benefit of rust prevention!

Nope, doesn't get it greasy at all. The trick is to use enough petrolium jelly to clump the cotten together and make it water resistant, but not so much that it feels greasy to the touch. All the jelly does is slow down the burn rate of the cotten a bit, you don't need/want a lot of it.

Since this kit is obviously intended to suppliment your other EDC gear, I am curious as to what else you carry daily. Would you mind also listing those items when you have a chance?

Is that a single mp-1 tab??
I would put more of them in that tin.

How much can you purify with a single tab? 1 Quart?

Coghlan's waterproof tinder has about the right proporsions of wax/cotton. And if it does give a mess, pack it in a little zipp-locker bag
