I faintly seem to remember something like this that was reportedly created for space flight, a source of nourishment without much fiber to expell (probably handy in space! <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />).

It would probably be better than nothing, although they do mention it as a supplement to other food you might be finding (greens, bugs, fish, etc).

Although you CAN go without food for quite a while (as long as you have water), those who have done it say it's not something to relish. And there are probably side-effects to even temporary starvation that would be undesirable if you were having to exert considerable effort to work your way out of a bad situation.

No joke, these are a carefully formulated supplement. Don't expect to add water and have Thanksgiving Dinner or quell hunger pains. They will bolster the nutritional and energy quality of rough field fare. You just have to decide if they are neccessary for a short term scenario.

At 250 calories for a day's supply of the pills, you will be getting less than 1/10 of a normal adult intake. You would still be starving on this, but you would at least be starving more slowly. I think it is roughly equivalent to taking a daily multivitamin pill and some protein powder (or powdered milk).

If you tripled the pill ration and supplemented it with a starchy staple such as rice, bread, potatoes or corn, etc. then you could probably maintain your weight, energy and health reasonably well for a while on it. You would still be lacking fibre and probably calcium as well as other things, though, so this would not exactly be ideal in the long-term.

The packaging is pretty neat, though.

These tablets have been around for 20 years. I think the original idea was that the container they come in fits in a standard USGI canteen pouch, so it would be easy to keep on your equipment. I really don't think you could, or that it was designed as a sole way to feed yourself. I believe it was thought of as a supplement to whatever else you had or could gather. Never tried them myself or heard any first hand reports. I have to go with Chris, for the price + shipping you could do a lot better.

If you believe the claims, the pills allow 90% of the nutrients to be absorbed, as opposed to "normal" food at 25--35%. So, the pills caloric value ends up being about the bare minimum needed...if you believe the claims.

The British RAF had something very similar to these during WW2, known a Horlick’s Tablets or Malties. They were packed 12 to a tin, not unlike an Altoid tin, as a 24 hour emergency ration. You can still find Horlick’s Tablets or Malties on line from specialty candy dealers. They both, Survival Tabs and Horlick’s Malties, taste like malt balls. I think the Survival Tabs would be great if they packaged them as a 24 hour emergency ration, but long term ration. As packed today one box of Horlick’s Malties (original or chocolate) would be a respectable 24 hour iron ration. See photo of original Horlick's...
