I have a cheap "Realistic" brand weather radio from around 1988 that only receives 3 frequencies. I think that was all they were using at that time. I have always been able to get a broadcast with it wherever I have tried it, including mountainous areas. 7 channels would obviously be ideal, but you may find that fewer is still useful.
