The post regarding the RSK's legallity in various locals illustrates bewildering and often contradictory laws. This is also a subject of much discussion at our friends BCUK and British Blade Forums. Sometimes law enforcement itself is almost as confused. This is when common sense and our own personal demeaner come into play. Dressing like James Dean and flicking my RSK at the L.A. Planetarium illicits a different response than cutting a horse's halter rope in an overturned horsetrailer with a CHiP watching on the 101 freeway ( happened this morning.) And no, I don't dress like James Dean, more like Lee Marvin falling out of the stagecoach boot in Cat Ballou

It's a topical subject here in the UK. Some parents of stabbing victims have just started campaigning for a mandatory 6-month prison sentence for carrying a blade shorter than 3 inches. 5 years for longer blades. As reported by, eg, The Independent, another child dies in a knife attack every 2 weeks.

These people are blinded by grief, and cannot see that knifes have legitimate uses. There is a more researched account at Channel Four , which says that "the children" are usually aged 17 to 19. The politicians themselves seem to understand that mandatory sentences are a bad idea. Current UK laws do allow you to carry a knife, of any length, if you have a reasonable need - eg for wood craft. It provides scope for courts to use common sense. (Although it was a court which decided that a folding knife is not a folding knife if it can be locked open - which I don't think is what the statute intends. Perhaps if the law is reviewed this can get clarified explicitly in a reasonable way.)

I completely agree about demeaner etc. Also, in the UK we rarely get searched (I've never been), so unless you are the kind of person who gets into knife-fights there's unlikely to be a problem in practice. If I wanted to carry a locking blade, I would, and I'd argue the toss in court if necessary.

Chris:

The movie "Cat Ballou" contains one of my favorite statements.

When confronted about how bad his eyes look when drunk, Lee Marvin intoned, "You should see them from this side". I still chuckle when I hear that one.

"Children" who die of gun shots and stab wounds are usually gang members, but the people who want to outlaw all weapons "forget" to mention that.

Laws regarding knife length and type are often ignored by LEOs unless they need to use them against some mindless jerk.

And my favorite scene where both Lee Marvin and his horse are leaning up against the side of a building for support! I'll have to rent that movie for the kids. They'll love it!

And I thought San Fransisco was bad for wanting to completely outlaw handguns! What's the next genius plan in the U.K. after this? Perhaps you can outlaw blunt objects! I hear kids get killed with those too! And I imagine that once you increase knife carry penalties more children will die at the hands of blunt objects. Wow that could be the end of cricket. Or maybe you could have a 5 day waiting period for purchasing blunt objects. Better plan ahead before buying new lamps. ROFL. Glad I don't live there. Being around that kind of ignorance isn't good for my blood pressure.

It is now (or shortly will be) against the law to buy any knife under the age of 18 in the UK. The down side to this is it is legal to do almost everything else i.e get married, drive etc etc under 18. So now a hypothetical scenario was posted in a newspaper the other day. A couple may get married at 16 and have kids legally but will be unable to go to a shop and purchase a set of kitchen knives for the home the are setting up.

Brian:

Don't know about Texas, but in Wisconsin, 17 will get you 20.

It's called the "blank" you get for the "blank" you got; sort of like divorce.
