Reinhardt,

Its not a question of being humble its a question of pointing out a knife that is seriously lacking in quality and is dangerous as I owned one and it broke cutting me the first time I used it. A cheap small SAK is a better option.

Never had a problem with NATO matches personally as long as they are dry, mine are 20 years old and work fine.

If you don't want opinions and constructive criticism why post at all.

Here is an example of a decently put together kit with good quality components based on Doug's kit philosophy posted on another surival forum. I wish mine was as good.

Flipper,
Found that your wording of the message left much to be desired. Neither is there need to re-post the message in an unrelated thread.

Discovered that the first picture is severely lacking in quality. So I decided to post a new one. And here it is! This time I have annotated it:

The pocket FAK is on the complete left and contains:
1 field dressing
1 triangular bandage
1 paper bag
1 pair of surgical gloves
1 safety pin
I kept it minimal so it could be carried in my left coat pocket. It is no the only FAK I own (photo coming up).

Below right is my fake Zippo. The real star of the show is the Bic, naturally. However, it must be said that it?s not carried day to day. The fake will do fine as long as I keep a close eye on it. For hikes the Bic will come along, but the Zippo wins on looks every time.

Above that is the Swiss Champ in all its glory. Try to wear it on my belt but more often than not is left at home as I can not hide it ? important in college. To the right is a basic ?Bloc? lock knife. Blade length: 95mm, carried in coat pocket so no probs concealing it.

Keychain is attached to length of paracord together with the Solitaire. When the quest for the Fox40 is completed the BCB whistle will join the keychain.

Wallet contains list with important info such as NHS (National Health Service) patient registration and family contact numbers. Like to add signal mirror to the wallet though.

One thing you will not see on this photo, but is apparent on the previous is my watch. When I replaced the standard BCB button compass with a Silva I taped it to the strap. Aided me to get myself out of city centres the way I came in first time .

BTW Judging which photo I should post remains a difficulty for me. Camera plays up (will be returned) and the home monitor is very dark (h/w problem). So I can only check the quality at college?.If the quality is too poor please let me know.

Reinhardt

Can you tell me what the wallet is? Does it fasten with that snap in the middle?

Err yeah that really is a recipy for Brochelsss... LOL

The wallet is fastened by a single stud. In the more risky areas I also carry a dummy wallet and old Cell in addition to this.

EDIT just noticed the recipe on the back of the flower bag. Can't say I've tried it. Well spotted!

FAK wise. The field dressings are always good for any real bleeding (generally too big for me personally to carry EDC butthats just me), likewise the surgical gloves are something thats always nice to have on you.

Personally I don't find Triangular bandages that useful for first aid, as they aren't really used as a priority treatment, and they take up space that other more immediate use stuff might be taking up. Plus they are the thing thats normally most easy to improvise with other stuff. They do have a lot of uses, but you can often do the exact same thing with say a cut up shirt.

Consider something like a vent-aid or other simple CPR mask, they don't take up much room and you may end up thanking the Gods that you had one after you just had to perform CPR and found something out about the patient.

Also even though they are quite crappy, basic plasters tend to be useful all the time, especially when you cut yourself just a little bit and need to work with food or something else you don't want getting into the cut (or blood into it)

Rest of kit:
Personally I like zippos, and if you use them regularly its not a problem for EDC as they will always be filled, with a decent wick and flint, because after all you use it. They only suck if left somewhere (like a survival kit) for extended times and not sued and maintained.
The Swiss Champ is a decent multitool although mine has now been replaced with the Leatherman wave mainly because: The Pliers are better, and the Knives are soooooo much beter. However as you carry a seperate folder its maybe not so much of an issue (although I never have room to have two knives on me without my trouser bulging far to unseemly ). And the Champ does have a couple of things I wish my Wave had (namely a corkscrew and an emergency back up pen), and particular knife / multitools tend to be very much personal preference.
Oh and personally I don't really like the Maglight Solitare and prefere and LED light, but again I think thats going to be purely personal preference.

Thats all I can think of for now.
