So I'm at home alone sharpening knives (as if that wasn't stupid enough) and you can probably guess. Yep, "I slipped"

I was sharpening the knives with a variety of tools, the diamond sharpener and a few others, progressively getting finer and finer. I was working on the sykes fairbairn with one of those "10 second knive sharpeners" and got ahead of myself (I did a stroke without making sure the knife was in the little "V" groove) and the result was I ran a finger down the entire length of the blade with a bit of pressure. Crap...

Apparently the knife was sharp enough

First time getting stitches... I think the shots hurt more than the knife!

Ouch! It sounds painful enough without the picture! In those sort of accidents I seem know whats happening but am unable to stop in time - and then wince everytime I think about it.
You have my sympathies.

Thanks

It didn't go so deep as to damage nerves or major veins (thank goodness) but it went deep enough into the dermis that one flap/side of the wound collapsed below the other side, which was a little unnerving.

Burn I feel your pain. In my last year of college I was trimming a branch from a tree with my oh so "dull" swiss army knife. Well needless to say I managed to cut part of my thumb off. I severed an artery in my thumb an didn't find the end of it to have it reattached. The only thought that gets me through it is that a gave some squirrel a small snack. Ha!

Geeze, I dunno if I could handle that!

Knowing a good chunk is missing might send me into panic

I remember the pain quite well a leatherman sharpened very well by the owner of the local knife shop. Tried to cut a wire tie, the doctor stiched and won't do that again.

Feel for ya

Ok guys you've done it now....I'll have to spill the beans too. Over the weekend I found myself in the same situation. Just happily sharpening away when my EDC knife suddenly went VERY sharp-edged. My brother was there to record it all.... ill bury my head in shame.

It was not as bad as Burncycle's wound though . I wish you quick healing!
Another story: over the weekend I was working at the restaurant washing wine glasses and applied a bit too much pressure to one....stem snapped and one end shot straight into a right-hand-finger...still hurts

You guys just don't understand. When this happens to me (at home or around my buddies) I quickly define the situation as a "field test" of the edge... "only the brave and dedicated will do so, but it is a necessary test of the edge geometry".

Meet any master knifemaker. If he/she has any hair left on his arm, or if he/she doesn't have numerous cuts dabbed with superglue or duct tape, be suspicious.

And to think the Gurkhas did this out of honor.

"Gurkhas has equipped with modern SA80 Rifles and are renowned as natural marksman. But they still carry into battle their traditional weapon - a 16" long curved knife known as Kukri. In time past, it was said that once a Khukuri was drawn in battle, it had to taste blood' - if not, its owner had to cut himself before returning into its sheath. "

Crazy critters them.

I had posted just a couple of months ago about the knife cut on my finger. Mine was closed with the medical superglue and has healed nicely.
