There was one in the late '80s that I liked. It was an old DOS/CGA game, of course... but the premise was a downed plane, you were lost in the wilderness with a map but no compass. Guages showed various aspects of your physical state.
What I liked about it was that there was no "god's eye" POV. All you could see was the map, and what was visible from your position on the ground (in wooded hills), panning around... which you had to relate to the map somehow. The weather and visibility also changed...
There are limits to a computer simulation, but we have the technology to do MUCH better now, and I haven't seen anything like that one since.
