Metal EDC tin small but bigger than Altoids tin?

My Altoids tin is just a fraction too small for what I want in it but the BCB survival tin is too big. Is there a tin in between any of you know about?
I read somehwere there may be a slightly bigger altoids tin ou there.
A tobacco tin is nicer due to the seal but all the ones I have found are the same size as the BCB survival tin or smaller than the altoids.
Dimensions should be aboutt he same only a fraction wider and longer with about the same thickness.
Cheers,

You know, I saw one of those last night at CVS and thought "that looks a bit bigger than an Altoids tin".
Looks a bit taller...

I believe the ones that I have are the 1.75oz gold tin sampler. Mine have a different design on the lid. If I had the gumption to dig one of them out of my BOB I'd measure one & compare to an Altoids tin. gino

I will be experimenting with a new round tin which used to contain milk powder and is more or less air tight and waterproof. It is a milk sample tin from the milk company (they hope for me to recommend the product to my patients). You could probably fit quite a fair bit of PSK equipment inside and have a nice compact waterproof kit which you could cook boil water in. Somthing like the 'you CAN survive' tin. See the pictures below. Inside is a Huntman Lite SAK for size reference:

Trusbx, that looks sort of like a Sterno can. Sterno cans also come in various sizes, so might be good for this.

It's actually wider and the height is lower than a sterno can. You'll have to burn off all the sterno 1st to use the can. I just emptied out the contents (expired soy formula) and washed the tin out.
You could see if any of your family docs have expired milk tins you could have...

Chris,
First of all, Hi. It's good to talk to you again.
Second, forget about the container. Let's talk about the knife.
3. How do you like it?
4. Does it feel too fat or heavy in your pocket. I've been thinking about getting it. The prospect of a corkscrew, a phillips screwdriver, and a white LED light all in one package are very hard to resist.
5. We tend to use our SAKs aggresively and frequently in food preparation and even in cleaning small (?) game when nothing else is handy. How waterproof are the lighting systems. We wash our knives after such use.
Thanks,
John

Hi john, I too could not resist a new SAK. First off, I like it. It's one layer thicker than a regular huntsman but is not so bulky as to be relegated to the too fat/heavy to carry pile. It doesn't really give a huge weight difference or bulk in the pockets for EDC.
Not only do you get the LED, Philips screwdriver & corkscrew, you also get the small eyeglass screwdriver, pen and steel pin in the sides. It really ups the usefulness factor quite a bit.
The LED light portion is not really waterproof, so washing the led module would not be really advisable. Splashes should not be a problem. I will try to wash the knife and see how it stands out and post a seperate review.

Hi Chris,
Your knife does look nearly irresistible. It is a very attractive combination of useful features. For some time now, I have using a Vic Fieldmaster. It has the same features as the Huntsman except that it substitutes the Phillips screwdriver for the corkscrew. Whenever I take trips, I never think to include a corkscrew. Fortunately my wife has the corkscrew on her SAK (a 20-year old Spartan which she stubbornly refuses to upgrade to the Huntsman I got her a few months ago--oh well, I guess obstinate wives are another topic). The idea of having both in the same readily pocketable SAK is very appealing. The further prospect of adding a light, a pen, and an eyeglass screwdriver in the all same compact package make it even better.
We'll see if Santa Clause brings one to our home this year.
Be careful in your testing. Information is good. But destructive testing is a little too much of a good thing.
It's good hearing from you.

Chris,
Thanks for the very informative and excellent review. It sounds geting the knife wet may not be much of a problem.
Somehow I had gotten the impression (apparently mistaken) that the LED light was made by the same manufacturer as the Photon. How well does the light compare to white photon?
Thanks,
John

Paul & Alain,
Thanks for the information. Now I don't feel like I've lost all my marbles.
Chris,
The photo does show a pretty substantial difference in the light emitted by the two LEDs. I wonder if Victorinox offers a variation of the Huntsman Lite with all of the same features except for the LED. I haven't found one like that yet. I think my ideal SAK would be the Huntsman Lite with the a file substituted for the LED. We'll see if they ever approximate it.
Thanks,
John

The local WallyWorld has some small tin boxes just slightly less than twice the size of the Altoids tin. They are intended to hold a gift card for Christmas. They are about two millimeter less in height; about four millimeter less in width but slightly over twice as long--ie. place two Altoids tins together on the wide sides and the WalMart tin is about four millimeter longer than the two together. They contain a plastic liner with finger cutouts to allow the gift card to be easily removed. The lid is lightly embossed with a ribbon design. Have never seen them before and assume that they are strictly seasonal.

Plastic Sucrets boxes are a little larger than Altoids tins. Maybe they're less rugged than metal tins but they weigh less. I like plastic. Here's a plastic box from Countycomm that also looks nice: http://countycomm.com/casegp4.htm

I was just in a, ummhhh, a sort of, ahhh, counter culture shop. I found a black tin 4.25" x 3.125" x 1.125". They had designs on the front that looked just like the leaves from a Japanese maple, a personage who I was told is one "Bob Marley", and multi-coloured, fractally toadstools. The one I picked up had a black and white optical illusion design of muchrooms on it. My goodness, what an unusual shop.
Okay all kidding aside, pretty good tin. Just a tobacco tin, with a sticker on the front that can be removed if so desired. I'm leaving the groovy, trippy mushrooms on mine though.
In Canada, cannabis culture shops are pretty common. I'm sure that in parts of the US and other districts, a veritable scorched earth policy has been waged against head shops, so they may be near impossible to find. Some record stores might carry them, maybe try that.
While in said shop I also picked up some small glass vials and some 1" zip loc baggies. Handy for small amounts of bleach, PP, tea tree oil, and small quantities of whatever pills you feel are important in your kits.
Another tin that might work is the tin that the Brunton Helios lighter comes packaged in. It's 3.5" x 3" x 1". I was pretty leary of piezo-electrtic lighters, since most of the ones I've tried have been a complete bust, but this one has stood up to two years of hard use with no ill effects.
