I had to deliver some documents for my G/F this morning on the famous Mullholland Drive that snakes through much of Los Angeles. I'm doing a crisp 40 mph with a BMW behind me flashing his high beams and honking, somehow expecting me to find a turn out on this narrow road so he coud do maybe 45 MPH with obviously lousy driving skills. I finally demonstrated my ancient Volvo's one mechanical superiority- 4 wheel disk brakes and LOTS of Sandvik steel suddenly filling his windshield. One urban problem solved and onward home. Then this big deer bounded ( deer never walk, or run, just bound) right in front of me. I hit the brakes again, and feel a thump against the passenger door. I'm thinking,OMG I've killed Bambi. I lean over, roll down the window and a mountain lion is collecting it's wits and giving me the look of somebody who just missed the all you can eat buffet and I'm the left overs. About this time the BMW drives up. Our lion snarls at it while I utilise my 300,000 logged miles 4 cylinder engine's remaining life to leave. Last thing I see in my mirror, the lion was slipping back into the chapparell and the BMW reversing at speed. Was I worried? naw, I had my PSK for the wilderness and urban carry. It's the labour Day Weekend people. Be safe and equipped,be it hurricanes, California drivers or beasties

@ 4 miles before Hayvenhurst. This morning a friend announced a bear was spotted near the Reagan Library. There are two escaped monkeys from the local college's wild animal programme and a blue and gold macaw has eluded capture for several months. I keep hearing the theme music from Jumangie

I am sad to announce that the wild wallaby popultion in the UK appears not to have survived the last winter.

There are however at least 3 feral flocks of parakeets and one of budgeriegars along with a flock of night herrons living wild in the UK. One herd of reindeer live in the Cairngorms, and scorpions have started colonising the docklands in London. Not to mention all the big cat stories that go round.

Oh yeah, and Nessie
