Like I mentioned in previous post (thaat was hijacked) I need new boots so I made a choice to pick those up:

http://www.uscav.com/productinfo.aspx?pr...6&pos=6

They have gortex (rain/snow) and seem to be cool enough for warm weather as well as winter with nice wool sock. What do you guys think?

Also I was looking at this knife from Boker:

Boker Knives, BK-AF546 Applegate Boot Knife

More and more I find my self wishing to have a fixed blade handy but hiden. I will still carry my folder but a lot of times it is easier for me (or my partner) to reach down and grab a fixed blade than reach into my pocket and open one up.

Thank you for your time.

A friend has the A-F knife, nice piece of gear. Required a good eye to resharpen, IIRC.

The boot knife is of good quality and well balanced. I would not recommend it if the primary use is rescue tasks. The knife has some disadvantages. The handle is pretty short and can get slippery when it gets wet. That makes it hard to apply certain grips. The chisel grind sets the edge off center. The double edged blade looks aggressive and prohibits grips where you put a finger on the back of the blade for fine cutting tasks. Itīs not too good for cutting seatbelts or clothes. After all the knife is a fighting knife and designed for stabbing.
If you want to buy one, you should defintely handle one before buying.

I asked a Marine that had been issued the boots. He liked them, no complaints. Best boots he's worn, either issued or private purchase. BQM has coupons online or for signing up for their email alerts that would help with the price. The knife is good quality, but it's a fighter. Not sure how usefull it would be for other tasks.

Matt,

NYC has a lot of local laws that are more restrictive on what one may or may not carry than the rest of the state. Please check your local statutes before you possibly end up wasting your money ...

Mike,

beauty of being 911 EMS in NYC is that you are allowed to carry any tools you want as long as it is justified... you work hard so others may live... PD has no problems with automatic knives/mace/weapons for EMS workers so boot knife on the ambulance would be the least of their problems. Especially if this potentialy can get me access quicker and safer. But I do get your point.

Thanks Dave. I was always loyal to them but they are a bit more expensive than us calv. I'm going to call them tomorrow and see if they can match the price.
