I was about to post this story -- a terrible sequence of events.

I live in a more temperate climate, and can't imagine trying to hike in these extreme temperatures. Perhaps local hikers are tougher, acclimatized to these conditions.

But it seems like the father was not fully competent when he got behind the wheel -- potentially expanding the tragedy?

Sad story. :-(

I have hiked and backpacked out there numerous times. Only once have I been on someone else's Outer Mountain Loop backpack in April. On our second day we hiked across the Dodson Trail. By the time we got to Homer Wilson Ranch, we were all not feeling too good due to the heat, so we stayed in the shade of the ranch and waited until sundown to hike further to our campsite. The ambient temp that day seemed to be listed as 84 F, but it felt like 10-15 degrees more on the desert floor.
