This has been going on for weeks, apparently without a resolution (that I can find).

Four children survived a plane crash in the Columbian jungle. All the adults were were killed. Searchers found evidence that they moved into the jungle, away from the crash site. They found personal items, half eaten fruit, and crude shelters. They are indigenous, so have grown up with some knowledge of the jungle environment.

But searchers on the ground and in the air cannot locate them. It's dense, difficult terrain. Even communications are dodgy.

Wow! I hope we get some resolution here! Kids can be amazingly resourceful and resilient, hopefully they're found alive and well.

Wow indeed.

Reminds me of LANSA Flight 508, got hit by lightening at 21,000 feet and broke the plane apart. Killed everyone, but a 17 year old girl.

We should not make a joke about a fatal plane crash.

According to reports, if these children were dead, the dogs would have found them.

It seems they're moving around, in nearly impenetrable terrain, which is the toughest thing for rescuers.

It's also worth noting that there are many hostile actors in this Columbian jungle -- smugglers, rebels -- and based on their understanding, the children may be actively hiding from their rescuers.

Can you share what's been going on that has made you feel like your life is a mess?

Hey, Eugene, we all have our moments. "Not my finest hour" etc. I've had a few. So it goes.

Back to the issue: what happened to the kids?

The searchers suspect they've been as close as 100 yards to the children and yet couldn't find them. That tells you how dense the foliage is.

I talked with a SAR person and it was interesting regarding the psychology of searching for children or people with dementia. Somehow you have to get inside their heads -- they don't behave like normal adults.

It's hard to see how the infant could have survived, unless it was already eating solid food and the others could feed him/her.

And yet the searchers are using dogs, and they say if there was a deceased individual they would find it quickly.

They are alive! Searchers found them, 40 days after the crash!

I think these kids know more about survival than I do.

Excellent news.

40 days, presumably minimal to no kit, and with a 4 yo and 11 mo.

Excellent link, Ren.

I like how the children grew up playing "survival games" with their elders in the jungle. They taught them what they needed to know in a crisis. Well done.

Wow, interesting stuff. I doubt any SAR operation in our part of the world has to consider splinter armed rebel groups in its search plans.

Not exactly. Unfortunately, if SAR is operating down near the Southern border, in many areas they have to coordinate with Border Patrol due to the cartels pretty much owning the border and they are often armed and dangerous.
