I was opening bags of sand this weekend with my Leatherman Wave. I LOVE THAT TOOL. Both me and the Wave got covered with sand dust and grit. What's the best way to clean a Wave and remove any grit adhering to it? I tried to whisk broom it, but I think it needs a little more TLC.

FWIW, I generally use compressed air.

Doug Ritter
Editor
Equipped To Survive

I don't mean to sound stupid, but in lieu of actual compressed air, will a hair dryer suffice?

No, but a can of compressed air like used for cleaning computers would probably work.

Doug Ritter
Editor
Equipped To Survive

Any idea where to buy the compressed air in a can, how much it costs and what brand names it is sold under?

Also, once I have cleaned my Wave or knife, I find Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide works extremely well to clean the implements even better and apply a rust-resistant coating at the same time. Tuf-Glide is easy to find online, just do a search or visit or your favorite outdoors etailer.

Bucky

Bucky,

Any computer or electronics store will have it, usually a buck or so a can, or less.

Tuf-Glide and Tuf-Cloth are good stuff. Benchmade has recently turned to Militec-1 http://www.militec-1.com/ for their knive and I've heard good things about it as well and will be testing it in coming months.

Doug Ritter
Editor
Equipped To Survive

Can you recommend a place from which I may purchase Tuff-Glide and/or Tuff-Cloth at a reasonable price, online or otherewise?

By the way, what will remove those dark "age" stains from older (and probably cheaply made) blades that have high sentimental value?

Virtually any gun store carries it. Other than that, try www.google.com and search on the name and you'll probably find lots of online sources.

As for the restoration project, that's beyond my experience. You might ask over at Bladeforums.com

Doug Ritter
Editor
Equipped To Survive

I use warm, soapy water and lubricate with whatever high- tech bicycle chain-lube I favor at the moment. Finish Line Dry is amazing stuff- lubricates, penetrates, prevents rust and doesn't attract dirt and grit and is available at your local bike shop.

One site with fairly good prices that I have good luck with is http://www.discountknives.com/Accessories/tufcloth.html . Just click on the link and you can order both the Tuf-Glide and Tuf-Cloth.

Hope this helps,

Bucky
