I discussed what I'm doing with Mom. I'm building a one-person survival system as a proof of concept. If we like it, I will expand it to include her.

The one-person system consists of a backpack and a duffle bag. Other than adding the PSP, which I have, The SEVENTY2, which I currently have, will remain unmodified. That will be the backpack part of the system.

In the hydration organizer, I'm including water packets and water purification tablets. I'm including a 10-Litre Foldable Water Storage Container in the duffle bag but not in the hydration organizer.

In the essentials organizer, I'm including a poncho, Three Wick 36HR Candle, tissue pack, a roll of duct tape in addition to what I have in the backpack, playing cards, GI can opener, Emergency Preparedness Guidebook (maybe), and a pencil.

I'm not a fan of TheSEVENTY2.

• It's expensive for what it contains
• The standalone flashlight is a "zoomie"; while I haven't handled this specific unit the type, in my experience, is neither high performing nor rugged
• The multitool is not one that I can recommend
• If the entrenching tool is the one I think it is, it's quite flimsy
• No information about the knife is provided, but I know I'm not a fan of black coatings on a knife that I want to be able to find if I drop it
• I don't recognize the emergency blanket but it looks like it would be an inexpensive mylar version -- the Heatsheets 2-person is far superior in ruggedness and usability

I could go on, suffice it to say that I could build a kit with better components for much less than this costs. It's not all bad news, the Sawyer filter is excellent (and what I would pick), the Datrex rations are well regarded, and the radio/cellcharger/flashlight (if it's the Eton it looks like) is very good.

The Sterno stove wouldn't be my choice, I chose an inexpensive isopropane stove (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NJYV3NP/) -- it works surprisingly well for the price. If I understand correctly, Sterno puts out a lot less heat for a given weight of fuel.

I don't see anything for navigation, a headlamp, or redundancy for fire.

Depends on users and climate.

I would not carry a full roll of duct tape.

I did look at that stove but went with the Inferno, which can be used indoors.

I also think a hiking pack, properly fitted with a beefy hip belt is a good place to start.

Also, always pack water.

+1 heartily agree with Chaosmagnet. Overpriced and under quality. Basically you can do much better buying contents individually.

Sterno fuel is ok for chafing dishes but inadequate for cooking or water purification. I have a folding shovel like the one depicted and it is ok but needlessly heavy. I prefer a model with a wooden handle. No name multitool - get a Leatherman.

You should try out the components in this kit, at least in your backyard or on a camping trip where shortcomings will not result in a crisis. There is a lot you will replace.

The PSP has a compass.

Would replace that camping multitool with a SAK and a spoon and fork or spork.

A Bantam provides knife, can & bottle opener, tweezers and toothpick for $16.

Few bucks more, a Walker also has a wood saw. The back of which also makes a good ferro rod striker.
