If attempt a dig out in this scenario, I guess you'd want a big bag/drum liner to put the dug snow somewhere, as only place it can go is into the vehicle.

If you're in a desperate situation, snow in the car won't matter.

However, it depends on the snow. Some varieties contain a lot of air, and you can push it down and pack it as you go.

Yep. Lots of snow. It looks like it's wet and heavy stuff too. And of course once it's "worked" (by a snowplow, avalanche, etc.) it turns into a sort of concrete.

But I still suspect there's more to the narrative than we know. I know some people simply shut down when faced with a completely unfamiliar emergency situation. Even when there is a residence a snowball's throw away. Maybe that's the deal here?

Would be interesting to know how he was dresed. Apparently not in proper winter clothing. Snow act as an insulator so there should have been warmer inside the car than outside.
