I recently bought "false" paracord, but decided to use it to try the "Slatts knot", to see how much paracord it allows to conceal.

Here is the result of my first trial. Not perfect, but I will replace it when I will get some genuine paracord.
As I still don't know how to make a belt (how to easily attach the fastening clips), I choose to make a crown, to adorn my hat :

In that crown (6 rows of cord), I have about 19 meters of cord !!!?!
Amazing , indeed ....
Making an 80 cm long belt out of it, it's about 25m of paracord I'll be able to stock that way.

Cool hat Alain, it looks a lot better than mine. Might have to add a little decoration to mine, but i will have to wait to get some paracord that is not bright red.

At least at the local fabric stores here, there are several types of belt buckles that snap into place. They don't have to be sewn, and are fairly secure. Get one of a die-cast type and you have a good throwing weight, too.

There are also ones that are just the loop and pin - thread the pin through a few of the knots and it would be fairly secure.

if you wanted to get fancy, you could 'weave' the buckle into the belt.

I salute you for your patience. I tried to make a belt from the paracord, but I gave up. Nice job!

I want to try something similar for my Tilley hat. How do you start the Slatt knot without having a belt buckle? On this page I found the knot and instructions for tying the belt, but nothing that would help with the tying of a hat band.

BTW, First post. Looks like a nice community here and I look forward to contributing.

That was my first try and I simply used a few cm of cord to make a simple loop (just an "O"), on which I started the weaving, as indicated on Slat's web page.
And I terminated on that same loop, on the other "side".
Well.... rereading my post, it may not be really clear ... I'll try to make a picture if you want ... let me know.

I'm presently looking for making a belt as indicated on Slat's web page you gave a link to.

Just missing the quick buckle at the right size (I bought some but they are too large to go thru my waist belt loops....

The wooden hook that Slat made? My wife saw that picture, and said it's a crochet hook. So, I asked if she has a big crochet hook like that (she's a textile hobbyist). She didn't think so, but she inherited my grandmas stuff, and there were several large ones, one that looked like it had the hook about the size of paracord. So I grabbed a few, and now I'm starting to knot a belt.

But this brings up an unsettling question- is this crocheting? If not, maybe I should ask my wife how to crochet, perhaps that would be a better way of doing this.

Here is my "loom" :



A plank of wood, with 2 hooks screwed in (2 nails would be OK too...), a piece of tubing (copper or any metal or plastic ...- diameter is 1.5cm) and a piece of electric wire (copper, 1.5 mm?) used as a crochet hook.
On the above picture, I have tied a loop of cord between the 2 hooked screws. That's what I used for the crown around my hat. For a belt, replace by a plastic belt buckle.


Here is the first step, with corresponding Slatts' drawing :



You make the paracord loops around the tubing, insert the improvised crochet hook inside the tubing and get hold of the cord on the other side. You then just have to pull the cord thru the tubing .

And that beats crocheting (especially with paracord ...).

On this picture, I made only 3 starting loops, as a demo, just like Slatts' drawing.
For the crown around my hat, I made 5 loops. And ended the last row on the top "side" of the loop I first tied between the 2 nails/screws.
And for a belt I guess 4 loop would be a max, if you intend to pass that belt inside the belt loops of your pants.
