I use both stored water and a basic filter.

I carry one in my primary emergency kit, but I’ve only used it on tap water to test it.

My experience with standard gallons of water is they tend to develop leaks. I've moved to a 55 gallon, food-grade, poly drum and three 7-gallon Aquatainers filled with water, thankfully because I have room for them.

Hi
standard gallons? as in milk jugs?
I've had those leak, in the bathroom and on patio.
Both actual milk jug and distilled water jugs.

This is regular bottled water plastic bottle in 1 gallon size, inside a cardboard box for stacking

Okay, in my case it was standard 1-gallon jugs of water. Hopefully yours are more durable.

I don't know how long you can store water in the bottles that EMP.. Posted. But the bottles are far more durable than the milk jug style containers. The one in that type that is currently wedged between the tool box and bed side in the back of the truck has been there for over 6 months without leaking. The milk jug style does not last very long at all in the back of the pickup.

Check out the new Sawyer additions - a tap filter and some adapters for their "mini" line.

I've recently heard about the Grayl Geopress. I've only done a bit of research but here's what I've found:

  • Fast -- they claim 8 seconds of pushing down to get 24oz of water through the filter
  • Unlike most other filters I've used, it has some capacity to remove chemical and heavy metals contamination, in addition to pathogens
  • The bottle looks well made and easy to operate
  • Very spendy -- $90 for the bottle, and $30 for replacement filters every 250L or 3 years after first use.
  • As far as I know, I don't know anyone who's used it

I carry a Sawyer Mini and think very highly of it for efficacy against pathogens and cost. It isn't as easy to set up to use as the Grayl seems like it would be, but it's easy enough for me.

My usage profile isn't a great fit for this given the cost and the sorts of outdoors activities I am usually doing.

Anyone hear know more about these?
