The only problem with that is the knife blade. Using a blade on a flint rod dulls the blade and helps to corrode it. Use an awl, screwdriver, or the best a short piece of hacksaw blade that has been sharpened slightly on the back.

Do you guys really like these rod things better than the Sparklite spark wheel thingie in the ETS PSK? Countycomm is selling Sparklite kits for something like $7 including tinder tabs.

The Spark Lite is great because it can be used one handed and as long as you are useing tinder you brought it is probibly one of the best fire starters. The ferrocium rods on the other hand are great for these reasons:
1. It works fine after its been submerged in water, even with minimum drying.
2. Larger ones can be broken with a rock into two pieces in case you need to give one to a partner.
3. They throw more sparks which makes it easier for damp or not the best natural tinders to start.
4. They last a long long time.

The guy in the illustration is clearly using his "SSSF" pocket knife..."Super Special Secret Forces" pocket knife. You see, alot of people don't even know that these pocket knives exist - because they're a secret. The blades are specifically designed to be so robust that they can withstand the riggors of a ferrocium rod...

...or maybe it's a backup mora...
