I ran across this article and had no idea that the "space" blanket could be so useful. I guess having them in my kit all this time was really a good idea!

Indeed, survival blankets are versatile, useful, light weight items. I have mostly used mine as components in improvised shelters or coverings for immobilized victims.
I would most likely use a survival blanket as padding for a one inch or wider nylon sling, which has much higher tensile strength.
I carry "sleeping bag" versions of the space blanket. They are still the thin cheap Mylar. I figure that getting completely enveloped in one is better than trying to hold it around you. It can also be used like a trash can liner as a poncho.
