I'm adding headphones, so I can listen to the radio...a good source of information as news is breaking. I may add a tiny am/fm jogger type radio as well. ( Save on phones batteries.) I very much like having headphones both for my cellphone and for my ham radio HT (or if you carry a small AM/FM receiver, for that).

Wondering: Is a GPS unit needed in the city? Or will an app or GPS watch do it?

Wondering: Is a GPS unit needed in the city? Or will an app or GPS watch do it? Smartphones have a great deal more capability in urban areas, including live data searches, detailed maps, and using WiFi to refine GPS location data. A standalone GPS unit likely makes more sense in wilderness areas for ruggedness and battery life.

Teacher: No flashlight or two? With the second one being a Photon Freedom or equivalent , “two is one…etc.”. Also, u might consider a clean, folded, hot ironed, brightly colored bandana, in a zip-lock type bag, for ur back pocket. Multi-use as Bandage , sling, carry bag, smoke mask, tourniquet (with a pen as a windlas), signal flag, etc, including to blow your nose! Wrap a few feet of 2” Gorilla Tape around the bottom of the l bandana baggie and you have hose or electric wire repair tape, bandage holder, temporary clothing repair emergency/ shoe lace or sole repair, dog hair or lint remover, etc. and finally that scion of EDC, the P38 US Army ( copy) can opener that doubles as a screwdriver and line cutter.

Multi-use as Bandage Am I right to guess that hot ironing is meant to make the bandana usable as bandage? Does it work well enough for that? Don't we need something like 100 degrees C for 10 minutes to kill the germs?

Sometimes in first aid emergencies, you must work with less than optimum materials. Especially if significant bleeding is involved, don't worry overly much about sterility. Th victim will perish within minutes if bleeding is not stopped. The hospital can deal with infection, if necessary, later on..
I believe you are correct for bandage sterility, but milk is pasteurized at around 175F for ten minutes or so -depends on the product. I don't thin hot ironing will induce sterility, especially in a back pocket (if it is anything like mine...)

I know that the hot ironing will not make the freshly washed but dry bandana completely sterile, but it will kill some germs. But what it does best is make a large piece of cotton into a nice compact flat pack.
For my pocket pack, I use the small Gerber breast milk bags to carry the bandanna. It’s light, thick plastic and provides a great seal. I reinforce the edges with Gorilla Tape. Push in the hot bandanna , press a hardback book on top to push out as much air as possible and seal while hot and pressed. It gives almost a vacuum seal. I carry the gorilla tape wrapped over some clear plastic report cover, cut to size and tape that to the outside of the sealed bandanna bag. The bag and tape together also give you two good chest seal sucking chest or puncture wounds to the chest or to carry a knocked out tooth or amputated digit.
