My attempts to assemble a pocket kit stumble on. You gain an appreciation for the dealers out there if nothing else! I have a firm committment to produce a small run of 4 mil orange garbage bags. A promising opportunity to use actual altoid tins was nixed by some suit and I can only eat so many. I am going with fewer items of quality and a caveat to add and learn. Are there any items members have difficulty finding? I have no desire to compete for water filter market share, just the orphans of retail. Naming this creature is even worse! I will garantee a full refund if anyone fails to survive with it.

As for a name I have always liked "The Oh [censored] kit." Thanks Brian, I actually have these boxes for my own kit. I keep asking Major for a bulk price without reply. Id hate to make a short run to test market reaction, actually succeed and then scrounge up another unit. These are pretty small. I actually carry two; one dedicated for first aid. This makes attending small injuries a little faster too.

why not just buy the altoids tins commercially. You wouldn't have to worry about them being available and you wouldn't have to buy them in bulk. You could buy them as needed. Even if you dump the mints the cost per tin is $1.50-$2.00. I don't know what you had in mind as far as price for the containers but to me this seems fairly resonable. You could even try sharing the mints with your horse. Just a thought

I am slowly accumulating a small stash. It is straining friendships though,imagine somebody staring at your Altoid tin wishing the mints gone. I did find a tin company that has many options. I can just see producing an initial run of a few hundred and then waking up to several thousand requested. Not even MY horses can eat that many altoidsLOL.

Have you thought about the little plastic boxes from Plano, or do you want tins specifically. I have several laying around for fishing lures and flys. They look like they would work well. I think they can custom mold boxes to whatever size you need, but I don't know about minimum quantities, prices, etc. I'm not sure how to post links....but the address is www.planomolding.com

You may want to look at Western Specialty's tins at http://www.westernspecialty.com/ICC_catalog_2001/pg_03.htm <br>They claim to sell these in quantities of 500 direct from the factory. I personialy like the plastic decon boxes. I tested one full of dirt and gravel down to about 10'. I had to add more weight to get it to sink. After an hour everything inside was still bone dry, (better than a box of mud and rocks ). It may not be the most easy to stuff in a pocket for most, but if headed on a short hike from camp, etc. <br><br>

I'm a Purchasing Agent, required to find more oddball stuff than you can imagine. What are you looking for, specifically?

I'm looking for a box that can fit in my flight bag to hold a survival kit. Ideal size would be about 9x11x1.5 inches. The 9x11 is pretty much maximum, but the 1.5 inches can go either way. About the size of a ream of paper. Plastic or aluminum, water tight would be preferable but I can tape it up if it isn't.

Clipboard boxes that you can find at any office supply store are just a little too big, although now that I think about it I should check it again.

Another thing everybody is looking for is a box about the size of an Altoids tin, or maybe a little bigger. A clamp that holds it shut would be ideal, sort of like the Sigg Midi or Maxi box, but smaller.

make that waterproof too and I'm sold

Chris they have some Platinum color tins that are rectangle. Although they don't mention cost...in my experience..if there is no price..you probably don't want to know. But they do have some awesome selection.

I woke up this morning and had to double shot my Starbucks Americano after reading this post at 5 A.M. I abandoned my effort years ago. It took Doug considerable effort with commercial backing to market his kit. I'm back to lottery tickets, recycling my nieghbor's beer bottles and fixing movie star's horsies <img src="/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I get an assortment of altoids type tins from my students. Once they know that I am "collecting" these types of tins, I can get 5 - 10 a school year. If you know a teenager, you could probably get them to be on the lookout for the chewing gum (bandaid size), altoids sours (round) and regular altoids tins.

Sometime next week we should have the BCB tins (3x5x1, bail closure, gasketed) from http://www.bestglide.com available; what I don't know is what the final cost will be.

I hope you ordered a LOT, billy. You're going to get quite a few orders for that, it's the perfect size for a cargo-pants PSK.

I haven't ordered ANY yet. Bestglide is the BCB distributor for the US, has just finalized the deal, and should have the stuff up next week on the web site. That will be nice! I am interested too. I know what you are going through, I am trying to negotiate a deal on Zebra billy cans from the manufacturer to sell here in the USA. Not an easy deal! I sure hope I can sell 48 of those bad boys! Keep us advised on the tins, they are perfect for survival gear!
