I think I saw the same post;IIRC he also was packing more than one weapon and lots of ammo. Undoubtedly he was a wee tad pessimistic about the coming apocalypse.
I hold a somewhat more optimistic view of behavior in an emergency, even one involving a great deal of disruption. I believe analysis of past incidents tends to support this view.
I intend to help my neighbor, because, who knows, the shoe may quickly be on the other foot and my neighbor will be helping me and lending capabilities I do not have. Besides, that's just the right thing to do.
Groups, especially ones working together, tend to weather bad times more successfully than-individuals.
But these Sudden Doom boards are fun to read.

I know some folks expect Mad Max, not cooperation, but I wonder how many firefights a person expects to engage in and survive? Alone, on foot, with no air support or allies on the ground, it seems that running gun battles won't be something you can survive for long. I think there's a place for body armor but a GHB is not one of them!

A big one I try to avoid is learning on how things work for the first time in the field.

A plate carrier seems extreme in a GHB, but prudent to keep in your house.

I think there's a place for body armor but a GHB is not one of them! My feeling exactly. Funny, I seem to recall two zombie shows that include scenes with a tacticool zombie -- someone thought he could survive if he just carried as much gun & ammo as he could. But at the end he ended up being a warehouse for the living...

I still kind of want to get some new Level IV plates but so far the zombie apocalypse seems to be on hold. I do acknowledge that firearms and ammo are prudent to have for practical reasons, but being a gun nut I have a decent stockpile of ammo for convenience. Good thing, too! I checked out the ammo aisle at the FLGS yesterday and it was slim pickings!

You're much more likely to be in such things as a car accident.

True. But preparedness isn't statistically analyzing the risks, then preparing for #1 and ignoring all the rest. Maybe the most likely risk is a car accident but that doesn't mean you should live on a diet of fast food, cancel your homeowner's insurance and removed the locks from all your doors.

I train a bunch of active-duty military, vets, and police officers. They tend to wear plate carriers and plates.
My choice has been that mobility matters more to me than body armor. I’m not morally against body armor, I just don’t think it’s the right choice for me right now. Maybe it is generational. If you grow up surrounded by plate carriers, you want to have one with you. I haven't really warmed up to hydration bladders, 5.56 mm weapons or rap music; canteens, shotguns and Bach are quite comforting. Boomer out-

Do y’all still think he was being “pessimistic” in light of the riots? As a city dweller, I’m pretty sure he had current human behavior well pegged.

Many people buy the wrong sized pack; both in volume and torso length.

Many people buy the wrong sized pack; both in volume and torso length. Guilty! A couple years ago I bought a $450 Mystery Ranch pack and didn't really pay attention to the sizing. I wanted a large waist belt but I ordered one with the XL yoke! Didn't try the pack out until the return period was over so I got stuck with a pack that I can't adjust down to get the load lifters right. The good news is I finally sold the pack...for $125! I'm taking it to the buyer tomorrow. And expensive lesson!

Blast, I'm kinda curious about your reasoning. High risk = plate carrier not needed, lower risk = needed? Care to elaborate your thought process? Yeah, not "low risk" but rather, "slightly lower risk than in the high risk areas". In the high risk areas it would be one versus 5-50 people. Plates aren't going to help in those odds. Skirting those places adds at least another 50 miles to the walk home but the chance of being attacked by a group of people is less...hopefully. It'd more likely be someone sending a warning shot or some group of previously-civilized neighbors than members of the MS-13 street gang. https://www.click2houston.com/news/2018/07/13/inside-ms-13-gangs-mafia-like-structure/-Blast

Through various sales, etc. I now have two plate carriers decked out with Ceramic/PE plates. One set is Level III and the other Level IV. From tests that I've seen the Level III that I have greatly exceed their ratings and will stop most 5.56 & 7.62 NATO rounds. The Level III is a pound or so lighter so I have that set in my Subaru. The Level IV is set up for home use with a pouch on the front that holds 3 x AR mags and 3 x pistol mags. Yeah, kind of overkill but if I never use it I'm not out a ton of money.

NOT carrying the "ten essentials" into the wilderness. Trusting their cell phone to save them.
