Don't want to get into politics so I'll be brief- just got the email update from KnifeRights about NY. Finally the gravity knife ban is being repealed! Congrats! I'll confess I thought that was tilting at windmills but it finally paid off. You've helped a lot of decent, law abiding folks, thanks.

Also a quick reminder to Amazon customers; KnifeRights is a one of the organizations that you can set up in the Smile program. You buy, they donate. To date I have over 40 orders that chip in a little bit towards KnifeRights.org.

Congrats to Doug and Knife Rights! However, The NY Times article included a statement by the NYPD that , “possession of gravity knives in the New York City subway system remains illegal. “. Query, does the new legislation redefine common Spyderco & thumb stud opening knives as NOT being “ gravity knives” ? Are such common knives knives still illegal on the NYC subway?

As to the subways: https://kniferights.org/legislative-upda...ent-on-subways/ At this point, I cannot say how this will end up. We are in high level discussions. And, our federal case is on petition to SCOTUS and if accepted and won, would also stop this. The legislation repealed the state ban on gravity knives, so whether it is a true gravity knife or one of NYC's unique definition of a gravity knife (potentially any lock blade folder) doesn't matter. And, just to be clear, the issue was never one-hand openers, per se. It was any folding knife with a locking blade that could be so-called ”wrist flicked” open was considered an illegal gravity knife. Not just one-hand openers.

I’m wondering if the NYPD statement that “ gravity knives” remain banned on subways is a bit of misdirection or bluff? The statute appears to redefine the term “gravity knife” so as not to include thumdstud or Spyderco type locking knives, with sub-4” blades. So true gravity knives , such as the old German Paratrooper Knife and spring assisted knives remain illegal gravity knives.
That is my personal opinion, but none of you are authorized to rely upon it. I publish it only for discussion purposes and not as legal advice. ( Yes, I’m an attorney, but I’m not licensed to practice law in New York and by forbidding your reliance and publishing only for discussion purposes, I’ve satisfied the law and avoided malpractice) .
Doug, has NYC tried to rely on any other law or regulation to maintain the ban.? Is the City still insisting that use of a pocket clip is unlawful “ menacing “?
