Which milk is best for long-term storage, canned or dry (powered)?

I looked at our pantry and noticed we overlooked something. If stores suddenly stopped selling milk, we have a problem.

My preference is powdered, although I don't know about relative best buy dates vis=a=vis canned. Powdered is lightweight for backpacking and similar uses. When I have cooked with it, I can't tell the difference (mostly I am making pancakes and biscuits) compared to fresh.

No reason not to store both.....

Here in Canada, there is 2% milk in 1 liter tetra packs which require no refrigeration until opened. Great for camping or prep with a shelf life of 9 months.

Not quite the same taste as fresh milk, but so much better then any canned or dry milk. There are also 200 ML (just under 7 oz) size packs available.

Which is a good reason to stock more than one type of shelf stable milk. I used Eagle brand sweetened condensed milk for making Key Lime Pie, so that is a valid reason to stock at least a couple cans. You’ll also need limes and Graham Crackers for the crust.

Can the condensed milk be used for making the heavy whipped cream topping? I think not, so you’ll need to experiment ahead of time to modify the recipe and stock all the shelf stable ingredients.
