At 12:30PM, Mrs. Hikermor and I experienced very noticeable shaking as the waves from a 5.3 quake just south of Santa Cruz island reached our home. Only slight damage on the island and none reported from the mainland. One is reminded, once again, of the utter randomness and lack of foreknowledge of these events.

The USGS had the magnitude calibrated and the epicenter located before we could access their site.

I didn't see anything on the news, but maybe that's not big enough a quake to be news? It would certainly be news to me! We don't get much for quakes in SD.

There was coverage locally, along with a spate of articles on earthquake preparedness, but life quickly returned to normal. There is more attention paid to the April snow in SD - now that's troublesome!

If Mr. Hikermor is inclined towards technical discussions of this earthquake, he should check out:

AKSAR, Thanks again for good info. I discuss the San Andreas Fault a bit in a talk I often give on the Channel Islands pygmy mammoth, which involves a bit of background on how the islands came to be (basically involved with the kink in the San Andreas that formed the Transverse Ranges as well. I am also deeply interested in the faults associated with the Transverse Ranges because I have seen at least one hazard map which shows one trending right through my property, definitely heightening my interest in EQs and readiness measures.

The report has this unfortunate glitch "Today’s earthquake happened south of Santa Catalina Island," but it clear as one reads on that the author intended to mean Santa Cruz Island, not Catalina.
