Is anyone aware of compact flares and/or smoke generators that do not use explosion, fire or heat at ground level?

Such devices would be useful if you are in the middle of a highly flammable area and had to attract attention. Once the flare is in the air, it would have to extinguish fairly quickly.

I am not sure of anything like that, what do smoke jumpers use to emergency signal? I'm sure whatever they carry can't be flamable. But, I would like to add another question now that we are on the topic. I have a pen type flair that is going to epire in August. If I was to...say...launch it off in a fireworks legal state on the Forth of July can I? Will it start a fire on land if launched up into the air? Thanks <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

According to all the laws I know about, you can do anything you want as long as you are willing to pay the fine and/or do the time.

Using a legal device for an illegal act is still illegal. It is designed for rescue and emergencies and when expired, to be kept in reserve or thrown safely away without discharging.

Good luck, and if it happens to go off "accidently" at said fireworks display, don't let them see your forum posts.

O well, I better just stick to bottle rockets. Pen flares are still useable after the experation date right? You just arn't allowed to use them as the required flares on ships/PWCs.

Chem lights are safe in an explosive/flamible area. And as I recall water proof strobe lights are also safe.As for smoke devices I refer to an old addage."Where there is smoke there's fire" there fore I don't think its safe. You can make a chem light more noticable by putting on a string and spinning in a circle.
