VHF CDMA capable walkie-talkie ... once the phones get a handshake the comms would have a very clean (low noise) signal. But considering the size of cellphone antennas, it might be better to look at UHF, 33 cm Band. $.02

Nextel phones would not establish the walkie talkie mode without the mobile telephony infrastructure.
