It's not looking good for these two dayhikers. They are looking at their third night on a snowy mountain.

Their car was found in a resort parking lot. No note, no route indication.

SAR has suspended the search twice, in part because they didn't have any idea where the pair were headed (which mountain are they on?). The avalanche risk is serious, and the weather has been bad.

It appears they have resumed the search based on reports from others who saw the pair. That narrows it down. Hope it turns out well.

Search is still on. The weather where we live is bad enough. Just above freezing with cold rain and sleet. Can't imagine how much worse it is at 2-3000 feet up on Cypress and in the back country. As always, a tip of the hat to NSR.

Search has been called off for now due to heavy snow, avalanche conditions and fog.

Outlook grim for two lost snowshoers on Cypress Mountain

The stories say they were experienced hikers, but probably not equipped for an overnight. We don't know their skill level for these kinds of conditions. Survival is still possible, but hypothermia never sleeps. Here's hoping for the best.

Search is still suspended today due to weather and high avalanche risk.

Sounds like they might resume the search this morning. Fingers crossed!

Just heard on the news (1:30 pm Pacific) that the search was suspended due to fog at YVR and preventing the choppers from taking off then inserting SAR teams into the intended search areas for today. Does not surprise me as where I live, it was quite foggy earlier this morning and did not burn off until just before noon.

Not sure though if SAR were able to get any ground teams in or not as the weather looks fairly good in the search area today.

At this point, this may turn into a search and recovery mission as it has been 5 days since the 2 persons were reported missing. The weather and terrain are stacking the odds against finding the missing persons alive.

Yes, that news is indeed discouraging, but you never know. I hope they get some decent conditions real soon....

The search for two B.C. snowshoers missing near Cypress Mountain Resort has been called off.

West Vancouver Police said crews were told to stand down just before 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

"At this point, due to the weather and the amount of snow that has fallen in the area, we believe that searchers on the ground have covered all areas that can be safely searched and all areas by aerial search, as well," said Const. Jeff Palmer.

"We don't feel we can justify continued risk to volunteers when there's very little expectation of positive outcome," he added.

Not a happy day for anyone. Tough, unstable conditions, and in good conscience SAR can only risk so much. These gentlemen still have a long-shot chance, and I'll hold out for the best. Meanwhile, I'm raising a virtual pint to NSR in recognition of their efforts.
