Neat Article on Successful Long Term Survival in Summer in the Boreal Shield I just had pointed out to me by a former CWS Graduate, thanks James. As I have said often in the "Survival Core Seminar" the Boreal Shield is my choice for survival if you can fish. But of note they started with a basic camping gear, limited rations, cooking gear including a pot, good fishing gear, and choose spring to fall as a the time to survive, not over the cold calorie consuming winter. They also unlimited supply of water and excellent mobility with a canoe.

Why would you pick the Boreal Shield over more temperate climes?

I think chaos asks a good question. I have always been impressed with the survival potential of shorelines with tide pools - environments typically brimming with plentiful food items available for the picking, although you must deal with salt water and fresh water may be a bit scarce...

My outdoor experience has been largely in deserts and temperate deciduous forests. Of the two the latter is the obvious choice for me.

the South edge of the Shield in Northern Minnesota is my stomping grounds,or canoe tripping lakes really.
I did another two week solo in September and if I had a sack of flour and a can of lard I felt I could of stayed the winter.
