EDIT: The
Wikipedia article on the 2011 Christchurch quake makes interesting reading. More than half of the dead were in a single building which collapsed and caught fire. More than 220 people were treated for major trauma and more than 6000 for less serious injuries (learn those First Aid skills!). The last survivor was pulled from the ruble the day after the quake (the person most likely to save you is your neighbor!).
This is why CERT training and participation is likely to help a lot when western North America takes its turn in the barrel...
